Total Average

Total Average (TA) is a measure of offensive productivity developed by Tom Boswell, longtime sportswriter for the Washington Post. It is very similar to Base-Out Percentage, developed earlier by Barry Codell.

Total Average is essentially a ratio of bases gained to outs. The intuitive nature of the measure has lead to its being "invented" many times by aspiring sabermetricians. However, despite its simplicity and common sense appeal, it has failed to find a niche, as it is not as accurate as more advanced measures, while OPS has gained wide acceptance as a quick gauge of offensive contribution.

TA = (TB + W + HB + SB)/(AB - H + CS + GIDP)
