Defense Efficiency Record, or DER, is a Bill James method for evaluating team defense, most frequently used to evaluate the quality of defense behind a pitcher. It measures the frequency with which the team records outs.

The formula for pitchers is: fielding outs per fieldable balls.

  • A fielding out would be Batters Faced minus the sum of hits, walks, hit by pitches, strikeouts.
  • A fieldable ball would be Batters Faced minus the sum of home runs, walks, hit by pitches, strikeouts.

It is essentially 1 minus BABIP, which is hits per fieldable balls.
