  I didn't collect the numbers, that was done by a gentleman named David Driscoll in 1985.

I asked Bill if this had been followed up: he said that it probably should have been, but the stolen base was dying at the time so it didn't happen.

  Thanks, mathteamcoach. As you'll see above the running thing, Bill James was good enough to 'critique' what I'd written and pointed out the same thing.

The pinch running factor and the batting order thing are very important, probably too important to ignore. But it was quite fun to play around with the numbers, so all was not lost.

PS My "Crash" Dick Allen book is at my folks' house, and I'll be picking it up over christmas. After that I'll be excerpting bits of it, so if you want to read about the "real" Dick Allen then you'll be able to do so.

  about 4 years ago I suggested to someone that Rolen to short might be a good plan. That was back before the Phillies had Rollins, and when Burrell was drafted as a third baseman. I think he might have had a good shot at being useful there, but who knows? Great stuff though, thanks.
