Rolen, then Chavez, then I don't know. Glaus maybe? Lowell? Aside from the top 2 third base has been horrible for consistency these past few years.

It's really a wonderful chart aside from Pujols.

He specifically mentions that a player must be the best for a three year period.

The series is called "Baseball Prospectus Basics". To me, that means it covers the Basics used by Baseball Prospectus. When the series started I thought it was obviously geared towards readers new to BP. They've gotten a whole lot more press this year, from Moneyball fallout and the Rose thing, and I think it's safe to say that this year's book will be the best selling edition yet (it's been top 30 on Amazon for a while now), not to mention increased wb traffic. It seems like the perfect time to run a intro course for all of the newbies. Most people here are not newbies.

Also, I imagine it's safe to say that they will continue to ignore possibly superior metrics in the future. It doesn't help them to say that their methods are inferior. They are a business, after all.

Was the Eric Chavez signing a good one? (March 22, 2004)

If you add up the five year WARP projection for every player, Chavez ranks 6th on the list. Pecota is actually VERY high on him.

The WARP projections on BP's Pecota cards look low across the line. Adding a full 3.0 to virtually every player brings them more in line with what they have done lately. Given that it projects Chavez to similar rate stats and playing time to the past 3 years, it's safer to expect that it "means" a WARP more in line with the past three (ie. 7.5-9.5).
