Batting Average
From Sabermetrics
Batting Average (BA or AVG) is simply the ratio of hits to at bats. It is one of the oldest offensive statistics in use, and is still often used by fans to evaluate hitters. The familiarity of BA has led some sabermetricians to mimic its scale in the hope that their new statistics would be easier for readers to interpret (see Equivalent Average and Gross Production Average).
Criticisms of Batting Average
- Batting Average counts every hit the same, be it a single or a homerun.
- Certain Plate Appearances are excluded in the metric: Walks, Hit by pitch, Catcher's Interference, Sacrifice Hits, and Sacrifice Flies.
